Experience

Dr Costas Papageorgiou began his relevant work experience as a research/clinical assistant at the Oxford University Department of Psychiatry, based at the Warneford Hospital, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. Between 1992 and 1993, he assisted in a number of research studies and clinical treatment trials, specifically focusing on anxiety disorders, that now form part of the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) guidelines recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for a wide range of mental health problems.


After qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist in 1997, Dr Papageorgiou worked in two National Health Service hospitals and Universities in the North West of England. From 1997 to 2002, he worked as Senior Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Clinical Psychology at North Manchester General Hospital and Research Fellow in Clinical Psychology at the School of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Manchester. During this time, Dr Papageorgiou held a number of roles including the hospital’s Chairperson of the Mental Health Research Group, Deputy Director of the Research and Development Committee, and Member of the North Manchester Local Research Ethics Committee.


From 2002 to 2005, he worked as Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Deputy Director of the Specialist Service for Affective Disorders at Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust and Senior Lecturer and Director of Admissions of the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology at the University of Lancaster.



From 2005 to 2022, Dr Papageorgiou worked as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Lead for the Priory Hospital Altrincham and Priory Wellbeing Centre Manchester. In 2021, Dr Papageorgiou was appointed as a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo, Norway.


Since 2022, he has been working as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Asto Clinics, a UK charity dedicated to providing virtual evidence-based psychological treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder.  He has also continued to provide private Specialist Psychological Clinics remotely (via Zoom, Skype or telephone) or face-to-face at the Sefton Suite Diagnostic Centre Liverpool.


In addition to his clinical and academic experience, Dr Papageorgiou has been extensively involved in providing regular psychological consultancy to sports including elite athletes, English Premier League Football Clubs and Academies; Sheikh Mansoor Racing Festival; film and television productions; and large corporations.
