Dr Costas Papageorgiou began his higher academic education and training at the University of Buckingham where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Psychology with Biology. Whilst studying at the University of Buckingham, he conducted research into memory and thinking processes in diabetes.
Dr Papageorgiou later obtained a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Applied Psychology at the University of Liverpool where he carried out research examining body-focused attention and death beliefs in health anxiety.
He remained at the University of Liverpool to complete a 3-year clinical psychology training programme, which culminated in the professional degree award of Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsychol). During his clinical training, Dr Papageorgiou undertook placements in a number of National Health Service hospitals and clinics in the North West of England. In particular, he completed extensive specialist clinical training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Metacognitive Therapy (MCT). He also received training in Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). Whilst training to become a clinical psychologist, Dr Papageorgiou carried out research testing and investigating a new psychological theory and cognitive therapy of social anxiety, which now forms an essential part of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended therapy guidelines for this anxiety disorder.
Subsequently, Dr Papageorgiou embarked on further extensive clinical research at the University of Manchester, where he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Clinical Psychology. This research focused on testing a new psychological theory and treatment of repetitive negative thinking processes or depressive rumination, which contributed to developments of another effective psychological treatment for rumination and depression called Metacognitive Therapy (MCT).
Dr Papageorgiou is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist (CPsychol) of the Division of Clinical Psychology and Associate Fellow (AFBPsS) of the British Psychological Society and he is registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
He is also a member of other national and international professional bodies and associations, especially the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and the Metacognitive Therapy Institute (MCT-I) where he is registered as a Master Clinician in MCT.
