Specialist Psychological Clinic

Dr Costas Papageorgiou provides Specialist Psychological Clinics online (via Zoom or Skype), by telephone, and in person at the Sefton Suite Diagnostic Centre in Liverpool. The clinics offer expert and consultant-level psychological assessments and proven treatments specifically for individuals with a range of mental health problems that are complex, severe, recurring or persistent and have not responded well to, or fully benefited from, other courses of treatment such as previous psychological interventions and medication. These problems include: depression (chronic, recurrent or post-natal), panic disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, health anxiety, binge eating disorder, and hair pulling disorder.

Dr Papageorgiou closely adheres to the clinical guidelines produced by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as well as the most recent developments in psychological treatments. NICE is “an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health”. Clinical guidelines are recommendations for best practice. The guidelines produced by NICE are prepared by groups of healthcare professionals, patients, carers and their representatives, and scientists. The groups look at the evidence available on the best way of treating a condition and make recommendations based on this evidence.

The focus of Dr Papageorgiou’s Specialist Psychological Clinic is on conducting thorough and comprehensive psychological assessments and delivering scientifically proven treatments as well as new and emerging effective interventions, some of which Dr Papageorgiou has been involved in researching, implementing, and evaluating.

The results of the assessment will help to guide the best choice of treatment, which is carefully and sensitively planned to address the needs of the individual. In addition to specialist Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the clinic offers Metacognitive Therapy (MCT), which is a relatively new and effective psychological treatment and “current results suggest that MCT may be superior to other psychotherapies, including cognitive behavioural interventions”.

Dr Papageorgiou offers a professional and confidential service that is regulated by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and closely adheres to the Society’s Good Practice, Code of Conduct, and Ethical guidelines, and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Dr Papageorgiou is also bound by the Data Protection Act/General Data Protection Regulation.

If you wish to arrange to be assessed with the view to receiving specialist psychological treatment by Dr Papageorgiou, please note that it is normally recommended that patients obtain a referral letter from their General Practitioner, Consultant Psychiatrist, or other healthcare professional. However, self-referrals may be accepted in the first instance.

Once we receive the referral letter or your initial enquiry, we will endeavour to contact you within 48 hours. Please note that Dr Papageorgiou usually has a 2-3 weeks waiting list, but urgent appointments can sometimes be arranged. All consultations may be paid for either by an individual, a health insurer, or third party. Dr Papageorgiou is a recognised provider of specialist psychological services by several private medical insurance companies. If you have medical insurance, please contact your insurer to determine whether or not adequate cover is available for your consultations.

If you are not able to attend your appointment, please contact us as soon as possible. Costs are incurred when changes are made at short notice. When any appointments are cancelled or re-scheduled within 48 business hours of the consultation date and time, the full fee is charged. The same applies if a patient fails to attend their appointment remotely or in person.
